Crop mobs let wannabe farmers get their hands dirty Always dreamed of working on a farm but little things like not actually having the land and super-long hours get in the way? A Crop Mob might be the answer to your prayers. Crop Mobs, which first sprang up in North Carolina, are groups of organic farm- and food-loving folks who gather once a month or so to help out on an area farm, assisting in weeding, composting, harvesting, and good-old fashioned hard work. A story in this Sunday's New York Times Magazine highlights the brainchildren behind the first Crop Mob, an agri-curious bunch of post-collegiates in North Carolina looking for something beyond a cubicle adventure. What they found outside of that walled world was a small, close-knit community of people committed to supporting sustainable agriculture. Since organizing last year, they've helped out at as many as 15 sustainable farms in the area. And their email list now has nearly 400 subscribers. Interested in starting a Minnesota Crop Mob? The Twin Cities region has nearly 50 CSA farms (community-supported agriculture), and there are hundreds all over Minnesota and Wisconsin that could use the extra hands. Go to CropMob.org to join the Google Group and start one in your area.
